Artist statement
Oils, clay, pencil, charcoal? Separately or together I love working with them all.
Over the last several years larger cloudscapes in oils have been my primary focus. Capturing clouds moving across the canvas or sensing it will no doubt rain at any minute is a magical feeling.
Pencil, charcoal and chalk have been a passion since I was a child. Life drawing and portraiture create a emotional angst inside of me. Perhaps it’s the anxiety of drawing the final stroke.
Sculpting the human form in clay is similar to what I experience while working with figure drawing. There is nothing like standing back to see what the clay has allowed me to do.
There are rarely figures in my paintings because I want the viewer to feel like it is their sky, their private place. The figures in my drawings and sculptures are mostly alone in their thoughts which to me is the only real freedom we have. A private place to explore and stretch is primary. It is your choice whether or not to share.
